Senate Budget Committee to Mark-up FY99 Budget

ACTION ALERT: March 10, 1998
contact: KARL ALTAU

SENATE BUDGET COMMITTEE TO
MARK-UP FY99 BUDGET THIS WEEK
Call Senate Budget Committee Members to urge them
to support the International Affairs Budget

Budget update: The Senate Budget Committee is scheduled to mark-up the FY99 budget
on March 11-12. (The House Budget Committee is likely to wait until after the Easter recess.)

President Clinton has requested $20.15 billion for the international affairs budget (Function 150).
This would also include funding intended for the Baltic States. The Senate Budget Committee has
indicated it will likely mark-up a bill that only includes $18.6 billion, the funding level in last year’s
balanced budget agreement.

Senate Budget Committee members should be urged to continue to restore the international affairs
budget by supporting the Administration’s request of $20.15 billion.

ACTION:
Call Senate Budget Committee Chairman Domenici TODAY (202-224-3871)

1. Thank Senator Domenici (R-NM) for his past leadership on this issue and;
2. Urge him to support the Administration’s request of $20.15 billion for international
affairs funding in FY99. This would also include funding intended for the Baltic States.

Call Key Senate Budget Committee Members Today (see attached list)
3. Urge Senators to support adequate funding for international affairs programs specifically
by supporting the Administration’s FY99 request of $20.15 billion for Function 150.

TALKING POINTS:
The international affairs budget, totaling just one percent of the federal budget, significantly advances
U.S. national interests by strengthening U.S. security; promoting peace and democracy worldwide;
expanding U.S. export markets; helping those in need; preventing crises; and responding to new
global threats. The Baltic States would also receive funding from these programs.

Senate Budget Committee Members

Please call as many members of the Senate Budget Committee as possible.
An asterisk marks those Senators that are of the highest priority. Thank you.
